Western Sydney Airport Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

Share on:

GHD was engaged by the Commonwealth Government as the lead consultant for preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the new Western Sydney Airport.

The Australian Government announced Badgerys Creek as the site of the proposed Western Sydney Airport in April 2014. Planning and assessment for the airport was divided into two key stages.

The Stage 1 development included a single runway serving 10 million passengers, nominally occurring in 2030. The long term development included parallel runways serving 82 million passengers, nominally occurring in 2063.

A comprehensive EIS was prepared by GHD in accordance with the Commonwealth EPBC and Airports Act. The EIS considered potential impacts during construction activities for the 1700 ha site and operation of the Stage 1 and long term development of the proposed airport.

The unique nature of the project, its high-profile and extremely large scale posed a number of assessment and approval challenges throughout the successful delivery of the project. The Minister for Urban Infrastructure determined the Airport Plan authorising Stage 1 of the proposed airport in December 2016.

Spatial Sciences

GHD's award winning spatial sciences team uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to acquire, compile, manipulate, interpret and visualise data to reveal geographic patterns and relationships. By bringing together large volumes of disparate data, decisions that were once largely based on guess work, become more quantitative and can be powerfully presented using map-based tools.

GHD has a reputation for innovation. We can be involved at all stages of delivery - from planning and project management, through to data acquisition, processing, modelling, reporting, map production and web deployment.
