Fred Thomas Drive - wastewater pump station and storage
At a glance
GHD supported Watercare Services to reduce wastewater overflows into Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour with the design of a large wastewater storage and pump station facility and associated pipelines. Catering for the expected population growth for Auckland’s North Shore, the new facility was also needed to meet wastewater overflow level of service requirements during wet weather.
The impact
A new 500 l/s capacity wastewater pumping station, a 3500 m3 volume underground emergency storage and approximately 1600 m of pipelines were key elements of the new facility located at Barry’s Point adjacent to the Shoal Bay shoreline. Particular engineering challenges included the location of the 10m deep facility in a closed landfill and within a 1 in 100 year flood zone.
The completion of the $30M facility has resulted in a significant reduction of wastewater overflows into Auckland’s harbour, improving the overall operational resilience of the wastewater network.
