With a vision of enhancing the donor experience, NZ Blood sought to create an environment that promotes warmth, comfort and a welcoming atmosphere. By doing so, it hoped to make a lasting impact on the lives of those who choose to donate, while also bringing the organisation closer together.

NZ Blood’s commitment to providing the highest standard of care for its donors is reflected in the thoughtfully designed refurbishment of their facility. The use of strong colours, textured fabrics and feature lighting in reception, waiting and recovery areas creates a warm and welcoming ambiance, while consultation rooms and donor suites are maintained to a medical standard.

Working in multiple stages to refurbish the whole site, the facility remained fully functional throughout the redevelopment process, including decanting works. Our mechanical, structural, electrical, hydraulics and architecture team’s deep understanding of NZ Blood’s business was critical in tailoring the redesign to the organisation’s unique needs. Graphical mapping of the complex work groups and blood flow within the facility helped establish our team as trusted partners in the project.

The grand, roofed Atrium space is the ‘crown jewel’ of the redevelopment, both visually and functionally. Through in-depth briefings and highly professional reports and presentation images, our team captured the imagination of the staff, providing a unifying feature for the entire facility.

The final design is a sustainable solution that increases laboratory space by 43%, provides a donor centre with a custom-friendly ‘Koru Club’ feel and accommodates the relocated National Office on the upper floor. The unified concept harnesses inherent synergies within the organisation, unifying the culture and creating a flagship site that sets the standard for excellence in blood donation.

The result is a space that embodies the company’s commitment to its donors and the wider community. With its warm and inclusive atmosphere, the facility enhances the experience of both donors and staff, creating a welcoming environment that brings everyone together.
