Yarrow Stadium's versatile transformation

In response to seismic concerns, the Yarrow Stadium redevelopment became imperative. Facing the closure of the earthquake-prone East and West grandstands in 2017 and 2018, Taranaki Stadium Trust set out to demolish the East Stand and refurbish the West Stand, including critical upgrades needed to meet safety standards.

In a collaboration between GHD and Boon Architects, the new East Stand brings a new level of flexibility. Its double-sided design lets spectators enjoy events on the main pitch or the nearby sports field. Plus, it can easily transform into a versatile space for conferences and trade exhibitions.

Prioritising inclusivity, the stand is now fully accessible to those with mobility challenges. In the hospitality area, three dedicated spaces offer both functionality and flexibility to meet a variety of needs.

The stand’s kitchens will open up for weekend sports and large-scale events, while thoughtfully placed gender-neutral facilities reduce waiting times. Enhanced changing rooms and flexible spaces for match officials contribute to an elevated experience.

Featuring a capacity of 1,800, the East Stand can accommodate additional temporary seating for major events, maintaining the stadium’s overall capacity for large-scale gatherings.

This project has successfully transformed the stadium into a year-round, versatile and inclusive destination that enhances the overall experience for spectators, contributing positively to the local community and economy.
