The presentation will use a case study of the City of Kirkland to show how Smart City technologies can help reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life in Canadian cities. It will also compare technologies and features that can connect vehicles and infrastructure for better traffic flow and safety, as well as discuss how cloud-based, real-time data collection and optimization can connect vehicles and infrastructure for better planning and operation.

Connected Vehicle Intelligence for Safer Roads, Confirming Speed Management Techniques

This presentation will showcase how vehicle telemetric data from Compass IoT can be used to evaluate the impact of traffic calming devices on driver behaviour and road safety. Pulling from a regional Victoria, Australia project, it will demonstrate how GHD and the Department of Transport Planning collaborated and innovated to analyze and visualize the data before and after installing the devices. It will also present the criteria and tools for measuring safety outcomes such as speed, acceleration, deceleration, fatality risk, and kinetic energy. The presentation will provide insights and recommendations for improving road safety using emerging technologies and data sources.

Leveraging Technology to Support Professional Development and Bridge the Knowledge Gap

This workshop continues the “Bridging the Knowledge Gap” workshop at the 2023 TAC conference. We will present findings from that event, and further explore ways to address the challenging knowledge gap that is being created by retiring transportation practitioners. The focus will be on leveraging technology through online training, AI tools, hybrid teamwork and organizational IT setups to promote knowledge exchange.
The workshop will include interactive activities to help practitioners identify beneficial tools for their organizations and teams.
