The Association des firmes de génie-conseil Québec (AFG) has honoured GHD for its contribution to sustainable construction practices and technical innovation with its Grands Prix du génie-conseil québécois. This competition highlights engineering excellence in 14 categories. This year, GHD was nominated in 3 categories and won the Environment Award for our work with Canadian National (CN) for waterproofing their crosstie revalorization centre.

CN’s Garneau rail yard has been used to store, shred and revalorize crossties for several years. Approximately 800,000 crossties are milled and valorized annually. In 2018, CN contracted GHD to prevent preservatives from contaminating surface water in a ditch adjacent to a storage platform.

To address the problem, our team provided innovative, design-build services. This unconventional project employed sustainable waterproofing and water treatment methods featuring geomembranes and a reverse osmosis system.

According to Robert Noel de Tilly, Project Director, Contaminated Site Assessment and Remediation Eastern Canada, "The completion of this project was very gratifying for the team. Not only was it completed in eight months, it was complex and included a dozen engineering disciplines and a tight deadline. Our terrific team came together to devise a solution that made it possible to contain and treat the contimanents with an innovative design."

GHD received two additional nominations for the Geotechnics and Materials Engineering category for work in collaboration with Englobe for Hydro- Québec for the La Romaine project 1, 2 and 3. The second nomination was for our own Mr. Robert Raymond, Eng. who was nominated for Engineering Consulting Mentor of the Year.

GHD greatly appreciates its teams’ unwavering agility and professionalism. The Grands Prix du génie-conseil québécois have once again recognized our sustained efforts.
