Bridges

Bridges are critical and high value elements of transportation infrastructure. Bridge engineering is a specialist branch of structural engineering which requires a developed understanding of traffic load distribution on bridge decks, support of longer spans, and the interaction of structure and foundation.

Bridge engineers deal with structures with a design life up to and well in excess of 75 years and as a result there are important durability aspects to consider that are fundamental to bridge design. In addition to new bridge design, there is an increasing need to modify existing bridges at various stages through their service life, as traffic needs change. A further challenge in bridge engineering is the increases to design vehicle loading as design codes are periodically updated, which means that the live load capacity of key bridges (some built over a century ago) needs to be  evaluated for current design loads, particularly as structural deterioration increases due to the natural effects of time and weathering.

GHD has a connected global network of more than 120 bridge professionals based across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, North and South America and the United Kingdom, dedicated to the investigation, design, verification of road, pedestrian and other bridges. Our staff has extensive knowledge, skills, and experience related to the discipline of bridge engineering. For more than 60 years, GHD has provided bridge design services for both major and minor projects including studies and investigations, preliminary and final designs, proof checking, construction engineering, contract administration, bridge inspection and remedial engineering. Our client base is varied and includes government agencies at local, state and federal level, transport agencies as well as contractors, specialist bridge sub-contractors and private developers. Our breadth of skills allows us to provide associated services, including transport planning, traffic and road design, waterway analysis, geotechnical and environmental investigations and survey.

We are continually striving to move forward with technology and have been responsible for the delivery of a number of major bridge projects using various digital engineering tools at multiple stages of a project, from concept to detailed design. Most recently we have utilised bridge inspection techniques that use UAVs to develop 3D photogrammetric models of difficult to access structures. The 3D models can be reviewed in the office in order to identify a more targeted inspection, thus reducing cost, safety risk and disruption to both road and rail users.

Many of GHD's engineers hold Chartered/Professional Engineer status in multiple jurisdictions, across the globe. In terms of resourcing for projects, we adopt a "best for project" approach where appropriately skilled and experienced personnel are applied to a project irrespective of their location.
