CHT Acacia Aged Care
At a glance
CHT aspired to replace an outdated aged care facility with a contemporary, multi-storey 60-bed establishment. The aim was to embrace the elevated views of the Kaimai Ranges and Tauranga Harbour while elevating the outdoor spaces for its residents.
The challenge
The original building was outdated, impractical and had compliance issues. Ramps within the building posed challenges for elderly patients with mobility issues and the layout was inefficient, limiting the number of available beds. To meet the high demand for the facility, CHT wanted to increase the bed capacity from 48 to 60. After exploring several options, the project team settled on a multi-storey building that capitalised on the elevated views and expanded the outdoor areas available to residents.
Our response
We designed a two-story U-shaped building that takes full advantage of the site's constraints and opportunities. This design not only maximises ocean views but also creates communal and secure outdoor spaces for residents.
Special-purpose rooms for bariatric patients were included in the residential wings and the central block houses front and back-of-house operations, including a hairdresser and a larger shared lounge with views to the courtyard.
To meet residents’ social needs, different spaces were created, including quiet lounges, rooms, patios and raised garden beds. The entrance to the facility is generous and includes a roundabout and a porte cochere entranceway, with a large canopy protecting residents from external elements.
We balanced design, safety and functionality while prioritising a warm and inviting ambiance. We opted for enduring materials decorated with comforting patterns to infuse a sense of home.
Toilets were easily identifiable to residents and handrails throughout enable accessibility. The plan also included subdividing the site for future development opportunities.
The impact
The new facility elevates the quality of life for its residents and staff. Together with CHT Aged care, we have created a space that is not only safe and functional but also inviting and homely.
