Alumni spotlight: Ashley Wright
At a glance
Our former CEO Ashley Wright retired in March 2024, making him one of our newest alumni. We caught up with Ashley to find out what he's been up to since leaving GHD and what advice he has for people at various stages in their career. What attracts you to the GHD Global Alumni Community?
"The 20 years I spent at GHD has undoubtedly been the most fulfilling phase of my career. It’s rare to find so many people aligned when it comes to vision, purpose and values. We achieve so much together and through the Global Alumni Community, I feel as connected to the business and our people as ever.
"Obviously, the connection is no longer with the day-to-day successes but, to use a sporting analogy, I’ve moved from the playing field to the grandstand and as a devoted supporter I am enjoying cheering every success from the side lines."
Tell us about your time since leaving GHD.
"It’s only been a couple of months since stepping out of what I would regard the role of a lifetime. I feel hugely privileged to have been part of such an incredible organisation and inspiring global team leading our business.
"My wife Glenda and I have already been on a couple of trips and we’re enjoying more relaxed time with the boys. There is no doubt travel will form a big part of our lives for the foreseeable future and how we effectively marry that with our other personal and professional ambitions will ensure we’re never at a loss for something to do.
"I’ve learned a lot professionally and about myself, and I feel my greatest challenge now is to decide how to leverage everything I’ve learned for good as I’m still young and idealistic enough to want to continue to make a difference."
What was most memorable about your time at GHD?
What guidance would you offer to those at GHD at various stages in their careers?
"Stay open to new opportunities and experiences and commit early to lifelong learning. Staying curious, no matter where you are in your career will ensure you consider all perspectives and remain open to new ideas and change. Whether you're just starting out or a seasoned practitioner, embracing learning keeps your perspective fresh and your skills sharp.
"Don’t be afraid to pivot and explore new opportunities. Every stage of your career is a chance to redefine your path and discover what truly excites you."
