Our team is responding to the global demand for energy transition services by creating a new team dedicated to Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). The team includes multi-disciplined engineering and geoscientist experts from the oil and gas sector with the goal to explore and exploit reservoirs to permanently store carbon dioxide – a key step to securing a net zero future.

Led by Heath F. Nevels, director of CCUS, the team is focused on supporting energy sector clients to achieve their climate goals from feasibility through execution. Their skills include both surface and subsurface capability to create holistic engineering and geosciences solutions across the entire CCUS value chain, from air to pore space and from concept to operation. The team is also an extension of GHD’s Future Energy capability – a global network of experts committed to helping clients and communities accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

According to Heath, “I strongly believe that CCUS technology is critical to the clean-energy transition we are currently seeing. As green energy sources evolve, the world cannot immediately shut off carbon rich sources of energy. Instead, a transitional period will be required until a complete break can occur. CCUS allows for the mitigation of excess carbon to bring the carbon output to a minimum.”

“CCUS is fast becoming a priority focus in the global energy sector that has matured from novelty to a commercially viable component of the clean energy transition. We have built a team of talented oil and gas industry veterans who are the driving force behind this new, global capability for GHD,” said Tej Gidda, global leader of GHD Future Energy.

The CCUS industry has been capturing CO2 since the 1920s and has been injecting it into oil reservoirs since the 1970s. According to the International Energy Agency, 21 commercial CCUS projects are operating globally, with 18 in North America and a concentration in Alberta, Canada, where the Provincial government is leasing pore space to store CO2.

The Alberta Carbon Grid (ACG)

A collaboration between TC Energy and Pembina Pipeline, the ACG is a world leading carbon transportation and sequestration solution being designed to serve multiple customers, industries and sectors. GHD’s CCUS team supported the ACG Industrial Heartland project, which was recently selected by the Government of Alberta to enter into an agreement granting ACG the right to conduct evaluations and testing within the awarded area-of-interest to determine its suitability for carbon sequestration.

Our team will be the technical provider developing ACG’s area-of-interest appraisal plan that may include subsurface modelling, seismic work, drilling and conceptual monitoring, measurement and verification plan development.

The ACG Industrial Heartland project will provide emitters in the area with a cost-effective, safe and reliable solution to permanently store CO2 while helping the province and industry meet important emissions targets.

Our team has been on the leading edge of greenhouse gas validation, verification and consulting services since the beginning of Alberta's implementation of carbon capture programs. Our experience and planning allowed ACG to successfully identify subsurface risks and uncertainties through our detailed geological assessment, simulation and design.

In accordance with GHD’s validation/accreditation requirements, GHD would not provide consulting and validation/verification services for the same project.
