GHD project wins two Engineering News Record (ENR) awards
The WIN Waste Innovations’ Ohio Landfills Desulphurization Project has won Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Midwest Project of the Year Award of Merit in the Water/Environment category and ENR Midwest Cites Best Project in Safety.
GHD worked as lead design firm alongside contractor ET Design-Build. The WIN Waste Innovations’ project address hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions from two landfills in the cities of Fostoria and New Lexington, Ohio. These projects represents the largest application of desulphurization technology for landfill gas in the United States, serving as models and inspiring responsible business practices nationwide.
The systems are removing more than 99% of the H2S generated at the sites, have eliminated sulfur odors, and have emissions levels well below limits established by the Clean Air Act. They are models for landfills nationwide and are inspiring landfill operators who see the value of being a responsible business and excellent neighbor.
Safety and risk management were primary concerns during the entire project, which contributed to the second award for Best Project in Safety. A formal risk analysis, site-specific hazard and safety plans and specific crisis management plans were developed for each of the sites and complemented with daily safety briefings.
WIN, GHD and ET Design-Build formed a cohesive team to design and build the systems. This is a testament of our partnership and the excellent work we are doing together to progress the waste industry and contribute to community wellbeing."
