Winner of the Management Consultancies Association's Technology Consultant of the Year 2024, Katerina Papadimitraki reflects on her work architecting data platforms and large-scale analytical systems that enable organisations to turn complex, fragmented data into strategic capability.
Katerina is an Executive Advisor in GHD's Data and Insights team, specialising in data engineering, cloud platforms, and applied AI. Her work focuses on designing the foundations that make advanced analytics, machine learning and AI applications genuinely viable at scale - building the robust, well-engineered systems that ambitious analytical goals depend on.
Data strategy only lands when the engineering underneath it is solid, my work sits at the intersection of engineering, analytics and strategy, making sure organisations don't just have data, but can act on it.
Since joining GHD in 2017, Katerina has architected and delivered large-scale data engineering and AI-ready systems across telecommunications and rail infrastructure. This has included building platforms that process national-scale mobile network data and designing distributed processing architectures to extract insight from complex, high-volume datasets.
More recently, she has led data transformation work in the rail sector, supporting Network Rail's East Coast Main Line by modernising fragmented data environments into scalable analytical systems. This involved designing and implementing a data mesh architecture from the ground up, establishing domain-oriented data pipelines, governance and access control patterns, and the infrastructure foundations needed to support a scalable, production-grade analytical environment.
