Watercare WTP Ardmore
At a glance
Watercare set out to design a workplace that emphasises contemporary design, improved acoustics, and a streamlined layout, all while promoting a culture grounded in equity, fairness and respect.
The challenge
The previous office had become outdated and lacked spaces for collaboration. Recognising this, the team saw an opportunity to redesign the space into a more inclusive environment—one that better supports the diverse needs of staff and ensures everyone feels valued and included.
Our response
Ardmore is Auckland’s major water plant, processing 70% of the city’s water. We were brought in to manage the project, overseeing design, procurement and construction delivery. Our team combined expertise in interior design, fit-out, electrical, mechanical systems and soft furnishings to create a cohesive result.
The project began with a site assessment as part of a larger programme across 10 locations. With limited “as-built” information available, we conducted detailed 3D scans to ensure we had an accurate base to work from. We then developed and refined concept designs through several stages, ensuring key approvals were secured at the right milestones to keep everything on track.
The Ardmore site is expansive with multiple functionalities, the office space acts as a focused staff area for the offsite work required as well as the control room operation.
The reception area has been thoughtfully designed to be warm and inviting, ensuring a welcoming first impression for anyone entering the building. It features Watercare’s signature blue accents, which are complemented by soft wood flooring that adds warmth and texture to the space. As part of the visitor experience, an interactive water filtration model has been incorporated into the reception area. This allows visitors to engage with the space in a meaningful way, learning more about the water treatment process and Watercare’s commitment to delivering safe, clean water to Auckland.
Sustainability played a key role in the design, with environmentally friendly flooring integrated throughout the building. The sustainable materials not only support Watercare’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact but also align with the broader goals of promoting eco-friendly practices within the workplace. The carefully selected finishes and upgrades have not only rejuvenated the space but have also made it more functional, creating an environment that’s efficient, modern, and in line with the organisation’s sustainability values.
The impact
The result is a revitalised space that not only enhances the work environment but also aligns with Watercare’s goals of sustainability, employee well-being and creating a positive, impactful experience for both staff and visitors.
