Towards the end of 2020, Sam travelled south from Cairns to Hobart for the start of a total lifestyle change. On his journey, Sam spent some time around Australia trying different jobs, even working as a fish farm attendant with Tassal in Dover, Tasmania, with the goal of returning to a corporate job once he was settled in Tasmania.

Sam’s journey back

Before his lifestyle change, Sam worked for an engineering company in Cairns as a geographer. After moving to a new state and around seven months away from a corporate environment, Sam found some challenges in re-entering the workforce including forging a new network and the prospect of working on totally different projects. Sam looked for a corporate job for a few months before he came across GHD’s Career Relaunch Program.

Time to relaunch

Once accepted into the program, Sam was excited to work on a diverse range of projects, with a diverse range of people, all while re-adjusting to the fundamentals of being a professional in a corporate environment again. This program was a way for Sam to develop new skills in the science industry and to build on his corporate teamwork and communication skills.

Sam’s ongoing role

Following completion of GHD’s 10 week program, Sam was offered an ongoing role and is currently working as an environmental scientist on contamination investigations and gas/groundwater monitoring events with GHD across Tasmania. GHD’s flexible working policy means that Sam still has time to enjoy hiking, surfing, swimming, making music and writing movie plots – while continuing to explore Tasmania.

About GHD’s Career Relaunch Program

At GHD, we think differently about returning to work after a career break. We offer a 10 week, paid, flexible program with the opportunity and goal of ongoing employment. This program is offered Australia and New Zealand-wide each year.
