Former CEO

“The 20 years I spent at GHD has undoubtedly been the most fulfilling phase of my career. Through the Global Alumni Community, I feel as connected to the business and our people as ever. Obviously, the connection is no longer with the day-to-day successes but, to use a sporting analogy, I’ve moved from the playing field to the grandstand and as a devoted supporter I am enjoying cheering every success from the side lines.”

Community and Engagement Consultant

"Ben Fraser was formerly a community and engagement consultant at GHD and now works with Transgrid. Currently, he’s working on the Victoria to NSW Interconnector West project, a proposed new 500 kV double circuit transmission line connecting the high voltage electricity grids in NSW and Victoria.

One of his biggest career highlights at GHD was working on the regional drought resilience plan for the New England High Country region. Having never personally experienced drought, he knew it was his responsibility to develop meaningful initiatives that would deliver real benefit into the future.

The most memorable part of Ben’s time at GHD was undoubtedly the people, having had the opportunity to work alongside supportive colleagues who encouraged growth, collaboration and a positive work environment. He encourages others not to be afraid to take on challenges that push you outside of your comfort zone, and to approach everything with a positive attitude, even during the tough times."

Technical Director – Environment, and Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager

Sophy Townsend.jpg
Based in Sydney, Sophy Townsend was formerly Technical Director – Environment and Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager at GHD. Since 2022, she has worked at EnergyCo, first as Director of Regional and Emerging Energy and now as Strategic Advisor for the Hunter Transmission Project, a priority infrastructure initiative supporting NSW’s energy security. Her career spans consulting, private development, and government, with key projects including the Port Botany Expansion, Western Sydney Airport, the Waratah Super Battery, and major renewable energy infrastructure across Australia. Internationally, she contributed to environmental permitting for several onshore wind farms and the first offshore wind farm in the US,: Cape Wind. One of her most memorable challenges was navigating multiple state planning jurisdictions in the US early in her career, which she overcame through extensive after-hours study. At GHD, mentoring junior staff was a deeply fulfilling part of her role, inspired by the generous mentors she had throughout her own journey. Her advice to others: align yourself with people you respect and enjoy working with, and don’t be afraid to take bold steps — across roles, sectors, and geographies — to grow your capabilities and build a rewarding career.
