Three observations shaping the future of engineering consulting in Quebec
At a glance
During her interview with the Association des ingénieurs-conseils du Québec (AFG), Isabel Piraux, General Manager - Eastern Canada, pointed out three ways in which consulting engineering is evolving and professional expectations are increasing.
1. Local know-how supported by global excellence
As projects become increasingly complex, detailed knowledge of local realities remains essential. This discussion highlighted the value of adopting a model that combines community-based expertise with access to specialized knowledge in 48 technical disciplines from across the globe. Such complementarity fosters solutions adapted to regional needs and can be seen in major projects like extending the Montréal Metro blue line and constructing a new Île d’Orléans Bridge and Vaudreuil-Soulanges hospital. Synergy between local knowledge and global expertise increases a project’s added value, longevity and performance throughout its life cycle.
2. Design based on sustainable development
The interview also recalled that sustainable development is no longer a separate component but rather a principle that should guide a project from its design stage. Be it mobility, infrastructure or development, this approach depends on interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering, environment, asset management and operations to design sustainable and resilient solutions. Examples include complex projects such as the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel and major infrastructure development throughout the province.
3. Transformation of the client relationship from supplier to partner
In addition to technical expertise, today’s clients are looking for real partners ready to listen actively, innovate and collaborate. More than just proposing solutions, this means guiding decisions and fostering dialogue while leaving clients enough room to define their own paths forward. Collaborative and flexible, this approach transforms an engineering consultant from just a service provider into a strategic partner.
These three observations testify to a changing profession, one in which technical performance, sustainable development and collaboration now go hand in hand, a profession that is helping to shape more sustainable communities for generations to come.
