In a recent edition of Environmental Scientist, Kripa Dwarakanath, Sustainability and Resilience Service Line Leader for GHD, examines the growing role of the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) in helping businesses address nature-related risks. With increasing global awareness of environmental issues such as water scarcity and biodiversity loss, businesses are adopting the TNFD framework to assess their impact on nature and integrate sustainability into their financial models.
In a recent edition of Environmental Scientist, Kripa Dwarakanath, Sustainability and Resilience Service Line Leader for GHD, examines the growing role of the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) in helping businesses address nature-related risks. With increasing global awareness of environmental issues such as water scarcity and biodiversity loss, businesses are adopting the TNFD framework to assess their impact on nature and integrate sustainability into their financial models.
Dwarakanath’s article highlights the need for environmental professionals to upskill themselves and join the sustainable finance, and that the TNFD framework may be imaginatively applied outside nature related financial disclosure projects to integrate sustainability performance improvements in organisation operations. The article underscores the value of the TNFD’s four pillars (governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets) in helping businesses measure and manage their nature-related risks.
Dwarakanath also presents a case study in which GHD assisted a global logistics company in adopting a water management strategy based on the TNFD’s LEAP (locate, evaluate, assess and prioritise) framework. This approach helped the company identify water-related risks, evaluate their impacts, and implement a phased strategy for water stewardship across its operations.
The TNFD has gained momentum since its formal launch in 2021, gathering support from more than 500 organisations. Whilst the framework remains voluntary, many businesses are now aligning their internal strategies with its recommendations. The UK government has indicated an interest in reviewing how best to incorporate the TNFD into national policy, reflecting its growing relevance to corporate transparency and environmental accountability.
Dwarakanath commented: “Unlocking funds to protect natural resources and combat climate change is urgent. Whilst primary purpose of disclosure requirements like the TNFD is to guide businesses to report their activities, it can be used imaginatively to develop concrete actions and guide investments in nature.”
