Real stories and alumni spotlights
Based in Sydney, Sophy Townsend was formerly Technical Director – Environment and Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager at GHD. Since 2022, she has worked at EnergyCo, first as Director of Regional and Emerging Energy and now as Strategic Advisor for the Hunter Transmission Project, a priority infrastructure initiative supporting NSW’s energy security. Her career spans consulting, private development, and government, with key projects including the Port Botany Expansion, Western Sydney Airport, the Waratah Super Battery, and major renewable energy infrastructure across Australia. Internationally, she contributed to environmental permitting for several onshore wind farms and the first offshore wind farm in the US,: Cape Wind. One of her most memorable challenges was navigating multiple state planning jurisdictions in the US early in her career, which she overcame through extensive after-hours study. At GHD, mentoring junior staff was a deeply fulfilling part of her role, inspired by the generous mentors she had throughout her own journey. Her advice to others: align yourself with people you respect and enjoy working with, and don’t be afraid to take bold steps — across roles, sectors, and geographies — to grow your capabilities and build a rewarding career.”
