What can house 10,000 double-decker buses and is larger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground?
A new state-of-the-art indoor shipbuilding facility that will be able to house two complete Air Warfare Destroyers or Future Frigates side by side undercover. GHD (including GHDWoodhead) was engaged by Civmec as lead consultant for the master planning and design of an indoor shipbuilding facility at the Australian Marine Complex in Western Australia.
The facility will be one of the most efficient and innovative in the world, significantly enhancing Australia’s maritime capabilities.
The scale is enormous, making this project a fascinating and complex challenge from an architectural and engineering perspective. The 29,000 m2 building footprint has a total of 53,000 m2 usable floor area and incorporates 22,000 m3 of concrete and 6000 tonnes of steel.
“Our team delivered a highly innovative solution utilising advanced structural engineering analysis and design to minimise the weight of steel in the building significantly and save capital cost. The design also incorporates innovative space planning and circulation concepts to reduce downtime for shipbuilding operations,” says Peter Tonkin, GHD’s Business Group Leader – WA Structures.
Within the facility, the ship and module Assembly Hall is one of a kind in size, built to accommodate large naval vessels that would otherwise be outside on open hardstand. It has an internal length of 206 metres, height of 70 metres high and 400 tonne lifting capacity.
Over nearly two years more than 100 GHD and GHDWoodhead people worked on the project providing services across civil, structures, architecture, geotechnical, building services and environmental disciplines.
