Adding to its global experience in underground space design and construction, professional services company GHD is further extending its capabilities in this growing sector.
Mark Claassen has joined as Senior Technical Director – Tunnels, based in Brisbane, bringing 25 years’ experience in the design and construction of underground structures, including more than 60 projects across North America, Asia and Africa.
His experience includes a wide range of tunnelling technologies as well as working on large, high-risk, multidiscipline projects and alternative delivery methods such as design-build, engineer-procure-construct and public-private partnerships.
“GHD has built a talented and diverse tunnel team, and I am energised by the opportunity to contribute to Australia’s dynamic tunnel market,” says Mark.
Prior to joining GHD, Mark served as Vice President – Operations (Tunnels) for COWI North America. He is a Registered Professional Geologist in the US, and a Project Management Professional.
Mark’s appointment follows Wolfgang Kreiner joining GHD as Technical Director earlier this year. Also based in Brisbane, Wolfgang has 15 years’ of international experience, including metro projects in Melbourne, Riyadh and Caracas.
He recently further boosted his skills with a Master in BIM Management, focused on the implementation of 3D modelling for civil structures.
GHD’s Brendan Henry has been named Service Line Leader, Tunnels for Australia, to support further technical development and growth of the tunnels practice. Brendan has 25 years’ experience around the globe and previously led the company’s Tunnels team in Brisbane.
“Our team continues to grow, enhancing our position as a technical leader in the sector,” he says.
“Importantly, our people work with colleagues and clients around the world to provide innovative designs for complex tunnelling projects regardless of location.”
GHD was recently awarded by the International Water Association for its groundbreaking work on Severn Trent Water’s Birmingham Resilience Project, which includes tunneling to bypass sections of the historic Elan Valley Aqueduct.
As Technical Advisor to the North East Link Authority in Melbourne, Australia, GHD is involved in engineering design of Victoria’s longest road tunnel at more than 5 km.
GHD’s tunneling skills are also in demand for pumped storage hydro opportunities, including the Genex 250 MW Kidston scheme in Queensland, Australia.
