Employee-owned engineering, environmental and advisory services company, GHD, is helping Clydebridge Chemicals undertake remediation and validation services at its operational manufacturing facility in Reading, UK.
Clydebridge Chemicals is a manufacturer of bituminous materials used in a range of applications including metal work and adhesive for roofing felts.
Over the next three years, GHD will work with Clydebridge Chemicals to prepare and implement a remediation strategy to mitigate the effects of historic leakages and spills associated from storage, handling and transfer of hydrocarbons at the site. The works will alleviate potential risk to aquatic life in a local watercourse.
GHD will act as supervisor for the removal of a 5,000-litre underground storage tank at the site and will undertake subsequent inspections of the excavated site for presence of hydrocarbon contamination. The company will also provide detailed design for a network of recovery and monitoring wells. The recovery wells will collect contaminants from the site using a range of recovery systems, whilst the monitoring wells will enable inspection of natural attenuation.
Removal of the underground storage tank, and flushing and capping of pipes, will be undertaken by Celtic Technologies. Installation of the recovery and monitoring wells will be carried out by Tor Drilling.
Jasmine Ghorashi, Operations Director - Nottingham, GHD, comments: “In addition to human health and environmental impacts, contaminated land can have major economic, legal and planning implications for our clients. Our multi-disciplinary team will be working closely with Clydebridge Chemicals to remediate their facility, maintaining regulatory compliance and mitigating potential risk.”
