Auckland Council recognised the need for a vibrant new space within the refurbished Bledisloe House, located in the heart of central Auckland. With a commitment to serving the local community, its vision was to create a space that was lighter, brighter and safer.
The challenge
The previous space within the Bledisloe House was characterised by a lack of vibrancy, cultural relevance and contemporary design. Its location in the bustling Aotea Quarter made it essential for the building to become a welcoming and engaging customer service centre and shopfront for the community, yet it fell short of these expectations. In order to transform the space into a more inviting and attractive destination, significant upgrades were needed to enhance its aesthetic appeal and create a more modern atmosphere.
Our response
Our team supported the Council to transform the once dark and uninviting Bledisloe Lane into a welcoming and engaging customer service centre and shopfront. With the new glass canopy and updated façade, the lane is now lighter, brighter and safer, providing clear sightlines that draw the eye towards the customer service centre and the popular Aotea Quarter beyond.
The new design has transformed the lane into a well-utilised thoroughfare for inner city workers, theatregoers and tourists, contributing to the wellbeing of the city centre by being attractive and distinctive.
The laneway design incorporates a modernist style that complements Bledisloe House, a building designed in 1959 by Gordon Wilson and Jack Beeres. The new glass canopy consists of a single layer of glass panels toughened and laminated with a decorative ceramic fritt pattern, which follows a sinusoidal path as a nod to the original form of the concrete planter boxes that were demolished during the works. The pocket park and laneway have been designed to provide an appropriate association with the modernist architectural style of Bledisloe House, creating a revitalised and attractive retail space.
The customer service centre is designed to cater to the differing needs of Auckland Council’s customers, with inviting graphics, colours and technology that create simple but inviting transition and record gathering zones. Customers have the option to speak to Auckland Council staff directly or manage their enquiries, payments and more at user-friendly self-service kiosks.
The impact
The redevelopment has enabled Auckland Council to deliver excellent service while connecting with a thriving hub in the heart of the city. Overall, the upgrade has successfully transformed Bledisloe Lane into a popular destination where people want to engage in social, cultural and business activities.
