Digital twin technology supporting Network Rail earthworks
GHD's digital twin helps Network Rail manage high-risk earthworks with improved safety and efficiency.

GHD’s earthworks digital twin for Network Rail West Coast South provides a high-fidelity, data-rich virtual model of high-risk rail earthworks, helping asset stewards make safer, faster and more informed decisions.

By combining drone capture, LiDAR, geological data, borehole records and climate-risk insights in one interactive platform, the system reduces reliance on physical inspections and lengthy reports while improving visibility of asset condition, neighbouring land risks and deterioration over time.

With coverage set to expand from 440 to 1,200 higher-risk assets by March 2029, the digital twin supports better prioritisation, stronger investment cases, cost efficiencies and improved safety across the route.

GHD's digital twin helps Network Rail improve safety, efficiency and decision-making for high-risk earthworks.
