A new benchmark set for methane emissions in Canadian natural gas
GHD, a global professional services company, has completed an independent MiQ Methane Emissions Performance Standard audit for Tourmaline Oil Corp., Canada’s largest natural gas producer, confirming Tourmaline’s achievement as the first oil and gas operator in Canada to achieve the highest level of certification under MiQ’s Certified Natural Gas initiative.
GHD’s independent audit verified Tourmaline’s integrated methane intensity across its oil and gas operations in the Northeast British Columbia Montney Basin, confirming the lowest achievable methane emissions intensity under MiQ standards and underscoring meaningful progress in methane management and environmental stewardship.
“This achievement highlights the growing importance of independent, science-based verification in advancing methane emissions transparency,” said Sube Subramanian, Senior Technical Director at GHD. “By completing this MiQ audit, GHD is proud to support Tourmaline’s leadership as the first Canadian operator to attain the highest level MiQ certification”.
MiQ is a globally recognized not-for-profit organization whose methane certification is designed to accelerate reductions in methane emissions across the oil and gas sector. Its universally applicable certification standard is grounded in independent, third-party audits and graded on a scale from A to F, assessing methane intensity, company practices and the deployment of methane detection technologies to promote transparency and comparability worldwide.
As an accredited MiQ certification body, GHD has conducted MiQ audits for oil and gas operators across North America, reinforcing its commitment to delivering science-based and sustainable solutions for public and private sector clients.
Tourmaline’s achievement, delivered in partnership with GHD and MiQ, sets a new benchmark for methane emissions performance and transparency in Canadian oil and gas supply chain.
