This project involved the refurbishment of Dilworth School's aquatic facility to better support education, recreation and competitive sport. By adapting and enhancing the existing pool, the school gained a more functional environment that meets current needs and supports future programme growth.
Dilworth's versatile sports centre
The challenge
As the school's aquatic programmes evolved, the existing 25-metre pool no longer provided the functionality needed to support current and future requirements. The pool's depth restricted its use for water polo and advanced swimming programmes. Dilworth School needed a solution that would expand capability while retaining the value of the existing facility.
Our response
We partnered with Dilworth School to explore solutions that would increase the depth of the school's existing swimming pool while enhancing its functionality and long-term value. Working with Thorburn Consultants and our Services Engineering team, we evaluated a range of options, assessing feasibility, risk and cost.
The options considered included lowering the pool floor, raising the existing pool walls and concourse, and constructing an entirely new facility. Following a comprehensive assessment, raising the pool walls and surrounding concourse was identified as the preferred solution. This approach achieved the required depth while minimising construction risk, reducing costs and maximising the value of the existing asset.
The project also included the design and delivery of a new pool water treatment plant and supporting infrastructure, alongside seamless integration with the school's new indoor sports centre. This included wet changing facilities with direct access to the pool concourse, creating a more functional and connected aquatic environment for students and staff.
The impact
The refurbishment transformed the existing facility into an aquatic environment that better supports the school's educational, sporting and recreational objectives. Students now have access to a pool designed to accommodate swimming instruction, water safety programmes, competition and leisure activities within a single, modern facility.
By enhancing and repurposing existing infrastructure rather than replacing it, the project delivered a practical and cost-effective outcome that provides long-term value for the school and its community. The result is an aquatic facility that supports student wellbeing, participation and sporting development while meeting the school's current and future needs.
