Some of Western Australia’s largest environmental and transportation projects have earned GHD prestigious awards from the state’s engineering professionals.
One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services companies, GHD, has been recognised alongside clients and partners at Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – Western Australia Division 2016. The company was recognised for its work on the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary reconstruction and the Gateway WA Perth Airport & Freight Access Project.
The reconstructed Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest wetland rehabilitation projects of its kind ever undertaken in Western Australia. It received the Engineering Excellence Award in the Environment category.
The project diverts water from Bayswater Brook into the reconstructed wetland, which passively treats the water and reduces pollutants flowing into the Swan River. It is expected to prevent 1.35 t of nitrogen, 200 kg of phosphorous, and around 40 t of sediment and other rubbish from entering the river.
Since opening, the wetland is attracting a diverse array of birds while providing recreational opportunities for the public. Monitoring has revealed the water quality is already improving. Engaged by the City of Bayswater, GHD was the principal designer and construction supervisor with WBHO Civil performing the construction works.
Chris Gwynne, a Principal Environmental Engineer at GHD, says, “We have been working on this project for the past eight years and its fantastic to see the hard work of our team recognised by the industry. Eric Singleton was a visionary who was successful in having the wetlands reserved in the 1970s. Rehabilitation has a created a sustainable future for this wildlife haven that brings nature closer to people.”
GHD was also honoured as part of the Gateway WA Alliance with the landmark project taking out the award in the Infrastructure category. The project was also highly commended in the Project Management category and runner up for the overall Distinction Award. Erik Geidans, GHD’s Market Leader – Transport in WA, accepted the award on behalf of the Alliance, made up of Main Roads Western Australia, GHD, AECOM, BG&E, Georgiou and CPB Contractors.
Erik says, “For many people arriving in Perth, Gateway WA is their first experience of our city and of Western Australia. The largest ever project undertaken by Main Roads Western Australia, Gateway WA transformed one of the state’s most important transport hubs, providing safer and more efficient links between the airport and the city. Congratulations to the Alliance for completing this project under budget and almost a year ahead of schedule. This demonstrates that exceptional outcomes can be achieved when the designers, constructors and client work collaboratively with “best for project” objectives driving project decision making”
Sheldon Krahe, GHD’s Manager – Western Australia, adds, “These projects have created a lasting legacy for the community and are a deep source of professional pride for us. Congratulations to our people, clients and partners for delivering such impressive outcomes.”
