Enabling talented early career professionals to gain experience and thrive on major projects is one of global professional services company GHD’s commitments to the next generation of leaders. GHD’s involvement on Sydney’s Central Station, part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, provided a great opportunity to give its young professionals firsthand experience on a landmark project.
For client Laing O’Rourke, GHD is completing detailed design for all civil, structural and building components of the new and upgraded rail infrastructure, in partnership with Aurecon and Atkins.
Sydney’s Central Station is more than 110 years old and is the city’s busiest station. The upgrade will make the customer experience easier and more rewarding, and forms a pivotal part of larger transformation of Sydney’s public transport infrastructure.
GHD asked some of its young professionals to share their experiences on their involvement in a project of this importance, scale and complexity.
“There are so many different facets to this project – seeing the designs come to life after years of planning, and being executed by the construction team, was really exciting and also really humbling,” said Amit Narsey, Tunnel and Geotechnical Engineer.
Amit joined GHD’s Sydney Geotechnical team during the initial stage of his career. “I joined GHD while studying engineering in Melbourne. I was initially motivated by the lure of interesting projects that would improve the world we live in, and the supportive working culture. These aspects have resulted in me staying part of the company after many years and a few different GHD offices later.”
Emily Rickards, a Structural Engineer at GHD based in Sydney, adds, “The most rewarding part of the project is being able to say we were part of what is one of the largest projects in the country in the heart of the city that will be a space we will all visit, move through and benefit from, for many years to come.”
Six years on from joining GHD as a graduate, Emily is now the Transports Structures Team Lead on the Central Station project. “Not only will the new metro line increase the efficiency of public transport throughout Sydney, but the refurbishment really brings a new light to the station whilst honouring the cultural heritage, creating a space that the city to be proud of.”
