The challenge

As part of the environmental data collection efforts, we led a long-term investigative drilling program to further characterize the subsurface contamination at the site. The scale of the investigative program required extensive coordination across multiple teams and stakeholders while managing complex logistics in a remote location. Adding to these challenges were adverse weather conditions that impacted field operations and data collection. The project team needed to efficiently manage and process large volumes of technical data while maintaining quality control and meeting regulatory requirements. With multiple stakeholders involved, clear communication and data accessibility were critical to project success.

Our response

Our team leveraged the internally developed Field Lithology Input Platform (FLIP) Tool to assist with streamlining data collection and reporting processes. This innovative digital solution helped address the numerous challenges posed by the complex site investigation. The project team collaborated across business lines and regions to complete comprehensive geological, hydrogeological and geochemical data collection. This included conducting detailed geophysical investigations, implementing drilling operations, performing rock coring, installing monitoring wells and collecting soil/rock sampling. FLIP enabled real-time data entry and validation in the field, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all investigation activities. The platform's integration with OpenGround® Cloud facilitated seamless data management and accessibility for all project stakeholders.

The impact

Implementing FLIP significantly improved data quality while reducing the labor required for drilling log creation. The platform's automated database implementation streamlined 3D modeling processes and reduced overall project costs. FLIP positively impacted the client experience by showcasing GHD's ability to innovate and deliver high-quality results efficiently. The success has led to increased productivity at the site, positive stakeholder feedback and additional opportunities for collaboration across regions. This digital approach to environmental investigation sets a new standard for future projects, demonstrating GHD's commitment to innovative solutions that deliver real value to clients.
