Strategic port city headquarters strengthens Pacific trade hub
At a glance
RIM Architects, now part of GHD, designed and delivered a sustainable 15,956-square-foot headquarters in Anigua, Guam that reflects Matson's maritime heritage while providing an efficient, modern workspace for their expanding operations.
The challenge
After two decades of operating from the Port Authority Administration Building, Matson needed a dedicated corporate office to better serve their growing customer base in Guam and Micronesia. The challenge was to create a facility that would not only accommodate their current operational needs but also support future growth while reflecting their long-standing commitment to the region.
The project required careful consideration of Guam's tropical climate, sustainability requirements and the need to maintain uninterrupted business operations during the transition. As a vital lifeline to the island's economy and surrounding areas in the Pacific, Micronesia and Asia, Matson's operations demanded a professional facility that would enhance customer service while improving operational efficiency.
The project team needed to navigate complex site constraints within the 2,200-square-meter land parcel while ensuring the design would support multiple departments including administration, customer service, sales, finance, operations, facilities and maintenance and information technology.
Our response
We designed a distinctive three-story building that celebrates Matson's maritime heritage through architecture inspired by shipping containers and Hawaiian plantation style. The ground floor houses parking and utilities, while the second and third floors provide 13,500 square feet of modern office space.
The design incorporates energy-efficient systems, low-emissivity tinted glazing and sustainable materials to reduce environmental impact and operating costs. We coordinated closely with the general contractor throughout construction to ensure quality execution while meeting schedule and budget targets. The flexible layout allows Matson to lease excess space, providing additional value.
Our comprehensive design approach included a welcoming customer service area, executive offices, collaborative workspaces and essential support facilities. We carefully considered workflow and departmental adjacencies to optimize operational efficiency. The design provides full backup power generation, enhanced security features and robust information technology infrastructure to ensure business continuity.
The impact
The new headquarters strengthens Matson's presence in Guam while providing their team with a more efficient, collaborative work environment. The building earned a 2017 Guam Contractors Association Excellence in Construction Merit Award, recognizing its innovative design and quality construction. Most importantly, the facility positions Matson to better serve their customers across Micronesia and Asia, supporting their vital role in the region's economy. The sustainable design features help reduce operational costs and environmental impact, demonstrating Matson's long-term commitment to responsible business practices in Guam.
The strategic location and professional environment have enhanced customer service capabilities while improving staff satisfaction. The additional leasable space provides flexibility for future growth while generating revenue. The project was completed on schedule in June 2017, enabling a seamless transition of operations and maintaining Matson's critical service to the community.
