Leading professional services company GHD and architectural firm GHDWoodhead have been commissioned by the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority (the Delivery Authority) for the detailed design of three new stations at Pimpama, Helensvale North and Merrimac on the Gold Coast, Queensland railway line.
Working as an integrated team, GHD and GHDWoodhead will design infrastructure that promotes sustainability and encourages people to ditch their cars and catch the train, providing active transport connections, bicycle storage, appropriate shading to deal with sun and storms, and recycled water use.
The new stations are being delivered as part of the Cross River Rail Project and will meet the needs of the state’s significant forecast population growth and the subsequent demand for accessible and safe public transport services.
A team of up to 100 people from across GHD and GHDWoodhead’s national network will be involved at different points of the project process from their architectural, rail, civil, project management, structures and building services teams.
“We are excited to be able to incorporate features that will move people away from private vehicles, promote the uptake of public transport, reduce congestion on the roads and better support sustainability,” says Munju Takalkar, Project Design Manager and Architect, GHDWoodhead.
“The new train stations will be fully accessible and include new platforms, lifts, pedestrian overpasses, station buildings and associated park ‘n’ ride facilities,” adds Munju.
Situated around the emerging and existing communities at Pimpama, Helensvale North and Merrimac, the three new infill stations will increase accessibility to heavy rail for Gold Coast residents, ultimately creating a number of regional employment opportunities when they are needed most.
General Manager for GHD’s South Queensland Operations, Richard Evans, says: “These three new stations will play a vital role in the continued growth of the Gold Coast and Queensland communities. After delivering the business cases for these stations, we’re delighted to partner again with the Delivery Authority to complete the detailed design.”
The project will also provide invaluable major project apprenticeships and traineeships opportunities for Brisbane’s local graduate architects, scientists and cadet engineers.
The detailed designs for all three stations, which will inform the preferred construction methodology and timing will be developed during 2021.
