GHD, together with EY and Beca, has been engaged to help the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) upgrade and improve the Defence estate. This work will support current and future military capabilities, and create a sustainable estate, through reducing energy, water, waste, and emissions.
GHD is a key alliance partner to the Defence Estate and Infrastructure Alliance, which will deliver NZD2.1 billion of regeneration projects across the entire NZDF Estate over the next 11 years. The project will upgrade buildings, infrastructure, and facilities at all camps and bases across the country. The Alliance will work on the design of the redeveloped facilities, while improving NZDF’s asset and facilities management practices. The Alliance’s first 12 months of work is extensive, and supports new and upgraded facilities across all camps and bases. Ohakea Air Base and Burnham Military Camp will benefit most in the first phase.
“A key priority of the Alliance is to deliver a sustainable Defence estate, in line with Tuku Iho, the NZDF Estate’s sustainability strategy,” says Al Monro Commercial Manager - New Zealand. “The scale of the project means we will also have a focus on the wider social, economic, cultural, and environmental outcomes for the Defence Force and New Zealand.”
This focus is reflected in the whakataukī “Nāku te rourou, nōu te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi (With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive).”
“Working in an Alliance is an innovative way to deliver estate infrastructure effectively and efficiently, creating greater value for the public,” adds Al. “Our appointment to this high-profile project reflects our strong multidisciplinary capabilities in business case development, building design, and asset management, and our extensive experience on Defence projects throughout New Zealand and Australia.”
