Global professional services company GHD has become a Toitū carbonzero certified organisation in New Zealand in line with ISO 14064 in September 2021.
“This is an incredibly significant milestone for our business as we start our journey towards removing carbon from our day-to-day operations. Through this process, we can demonstrate to our people, clients, and community that we can act locally, make it real, and deliver on our own climate commitments,” says Stephen Douglass, Market Leader - Environment.
The certification is the latest development in GHD’s work to measure and manage its carbon footprint in New Zealand, in line with our global commitment and Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality (Scope 1, 2 and 3 sources) by 2025. By gathering and analysing data from our 9 offices across both North and South Islands, we have identified and characterised our corporate carbon emissions for a baseline year (2020-2021) which has informed our planning for carbon reductions over the next five years.
One of the key steps in our New Zealand reductions plan is already underway as we have made the commitment to transition most of our vehicle fleet to more energy efficient EVs and Hybrids over the coming year.
Whilst working through this plan to reduce emissions, we are proactively offsetting our impacts through the purchase of internationally recognised carbon credits through the Toitū programme. This includes offsets associated with the Fair Trade Oromia Cook Stove Distribution Project, a project that introduces energy-efficient cookstoves into the rural area of Oromia, Ethiopia, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in tens of thousands of houses.
