In 2015 the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 targets to bring about a better, more sustainable world for all by 2030. SDG 6 is to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.
On behalf of the Australian Government, GHD is implementing the Water for Women Fund, with 19 projects being carried out by civil society partners in 13 countries in Asia and the Pacific.
The aim of Water for Women is to “deliver improved health, gender quality and well-being of Asian and Pacific communities through inclusive, sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)”. These civil society projects, and the Fund as a whole, directly contribute to SDG 6.
The Water for Women Fund recognises that we operate in a complex system, whereby the progression towards one goal has significant impacts on others. As we and our partners work towards SDG 6, our projects will also address critical elements of climate change (SDG 13), the oceans and seas (SDG 14), and terrestrial ecosystems (SDG 15).
As the Fund Coordinator for Water for Women, we continue to work with our partners on risk assessments of each project’s impact on climate change and the environment. On World Environment Day, 5 June, we encourage everyone to consider their environmental impact and how we work with our environment to support present and future generations.
