GHD has developed one of five winning innovative ideas at the New South Wales (NSW) Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Innovation Network Initiative.
Our team took out the top honours with the Mobile Aided In-Vehicle Indication System (MAIVIS), a smartphone application concept which uses a calibrated in-built GPS, camera and accelerometer to catalogue real-time road conditions. The application measures the 'road roughness index' and uploads the data for analysis, making MAIVIS a low-cost and effective way of surveying road conditions and undertaking pavement inspections in regional NSW.
The inaugural Innovation Network Initiative aims to partner with industry to explore innovation and more efficient maintenance solutions on regional NSW roads to deliver greater benefit to rural road users.
The Initiative attracted 80 entries from a multitude of industry participants, who proposed new ways to improve RMS' regional roads maintenance program, which covers more than 15,000 kilometres of road and bridge infrastructure.
GHD’s team from both Sydney and Perth offices was led by Iain McKenzie (RMS Client Relationship Manager), Russell Clayton (Pavements Technical Director, Perth), Jillian Smith (Manager – Structures, Maritime & Materials, Sydney) and Colin Dominish (Sydney Market Leader, Transport) demonstrating GHD’s capacity to leverage broad experience, technical expertise and a connected global network to deliver innovative solutions to our clients.
Colin Dominish says, "RMS will fund a trial of our winning innovation as part of their maintenance program for 2018/2019. If MAIVIS proves to be successful during the trial period, there is the potential for use with road agencies in the future.
