GHD has been appointed as Principal’s Technical Advisor by the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for the Penlink project in New Zealand.
Penlink will provide a new transport link between State Highway 1 and Whangaparāoa Peninsula, north of Auckland. The project will open up access to new residential and employment areas, and increase travel choices through new public transport, walking, and cycling facilities.
GHD’s role includes further developing the preliminary design prior to construction. The company will also help Waka Kotahi to finalise the specifications for the project and assist through the procurement process for the appointment of construction partners who will enter an alliance to design and build the new road.
Penlink is part of the NZD6.8 billion New Zealand Upgrade Programme that aims to stimulate the economy as the country recovers from the impacts of Covid-19. The programme includes 20 projects to improve public transport, roads, walking and cycling in New Zealand’s growth areas.
Al Monro, GHD’s Commercial Manager - New Zealand, says, “Penlink will set a new benchmark for how major transportation projects are delivered in New Zealand. We are proud to use our knowledge and wide range of skills to collaborate closely with Waka Kotahi. Our work during the pre-implementation phase of the project will help enable successful delivery by a hybrid alliance of construction partners.”
“Getting GHD on board will help the project gain new momentum as we work towards the start of construction. It’s great to have their skills and expertise contributing to the project,” says Andrew Thackwray, Waka Kotahi Senior Manager Project Delivery.
