One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services companies, GHD is celebrating its remarkable history in Canberra and the surrounding region.
Founded in 1928 in Melbourne, the company opened its Canberra office in 1966 with an initial focus on water and urban development projects.
Its services quickly grew and diversified as Canberra expanded. Today, GHD employs more than 100 people in Canberra and Southern NSW, providing a range of services across water, energy and resources, environment, property and buildings, and transportation.
When she was selected to lead the regional business in 2012, Jo Metcalfe was one of the first women in GHD to take up such a senior role. Achieving sustained growth in a challenging market, she is optimistic about GHD’s outlook in Canberra and beyond.
She explains, “Our success is based on long-term relationships with local clients in both public and private sectors. Our people are passionate about creating a lasting benefit for the community and this is evident in the projects we deliver for our clients. Being based in Canberra brings opportunities to get involved in some unique technical challenges, from assessing the building condition of Parliament House to assisting the National Archives of Australia with its 150 linear kilometre storage facility.
“We have consistently supported the next generation of engineers, architects and scientists. Ten graduates will be joining our team in 2017. In addition, GHD is a supporter of the High School STEM awards to encourage Canberrans to take up rewarding careers in the engineering, science and other technical fields.
“The skills our people develop locally are in demand all over the world. I was very proud when one of our interior designers, a born-and-bred Canberran, took up a secondment in our Abu Dhabi office to expand our services in the Middle East.
“Our presence here has been a springboard to expansion in nearby regional areas, with offices in Nowra, Wagga Wagga and Bega and as far afield as Port Moresby. Canberra is home to our International Development Assistance team that’s helping improve the lives of communities in PNG, the Pacific Islands and other regions.”
Some of the company’s signature projects include the design of the Enlarged Cotter Dam, and project management of the iconic Black Mountain communications tower and the landmark Headquarters Joint Operational Command in Bungendore.
GHD is proud to be currently working on the ACT Healthy Waterways and new Courts facilities project, a new 14,000 sqm fitout for the Australian Bureau of Statistics, wastewater treatment plants in Queanbeyan and ACT and the duplication of Ashley Drive in Tuggeranong, just to name a few of the 250 live projects in the region.
