GHD, one of the world’s leading professional services and innovative engineering companies, is pleased to announce it has been commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver a suite of scheme designs as part of the Bus Priority Programme. GHD will support TfL on this important project to improve bus progression and speeds along a number of corridors throughout the capital, thereby helping to build a more efficient public transport network in the capital for the benefit of residents, commuters and visitors. The bus sector is currently a key area of focus for the government, with Boris Johnson recently launching a major new £3 billion UK-wide bus strategy, which will see buses become more frequent, cheaper, greener and easier to use.
TfL has been undertaking network performance reviews via on-site and virtual investigations for a variety of bus corridors to review existing bus priority measures, challenges and opportunities, identifying locations where enhancements could be made. Over 90 schemes have been identified and GHD has been tasked with progressing 25 of these, which have been identified as being high impact and low cost. These include investigating bus priority improvements to corridors, junctions, crossings and associated signals, changes to corridor parking and loading provision, and the creation of new bus lanes.
The GHD team have been appointed as virtual secondments and are acting as dedicated TfL resources for the duration of the commission. GHD has worked with TfL in a number of capacities, having previously been awarded contracts under its Transport Planning & Impact Monitoring, Engineering, and Project Management Frameworks. In 2020, GHD was also appointed as TfL’s Traffic Engineering Support Partner to work within the team developing feasibility designs for Cycle Future Route 15 (CFR 15) between Streatham and Oval.
Craig Adams, TfL Client Account Director at GHD, said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside TfL on this important transport programme, which forms part of the government’s strategy to ensure greater access to bus services for all. The bus sector is currently in the midst of one of the largest overhauls in recent times, and it is testament to GHD’s proven and innovative solutions and technical credentials that we have been chosen to support TfL once again on improving the capital’s transport network for the benefit of the wider London community. As people slowly return to workplaces and start visiting the city again, efficient and reliable public transport will play a key role in helping the economy recover, in addition to encouraging people to travel less by car. We are proud to be involved in the creation of more sustainable urban communities and delivering solutions that will benefit future generations to come."
