Global professional services company GHD has contributed to the development of the Renewable Energy Storage Roadmap, developed by Australia’s national science agency CSIRO.
The report shows that storage capacity must grow significantly over coming decades to keep pace with rapidly rising electricity demand while enabling Australia to achieve a net zero transition.
GHD has long recognised the pivotal role that energy storage will play in accelerating the energy transition and the scale of investment that will be required. We are pleased to support the CSIRO’s development of the roadmap as we continue to support clients with their energy storage challenges.
GHD’s contributions to the report drew from the company’s experience in battery, pumped hydro, hydrogen and other types of energy storage projects in Australia and globally.
“We are seeing viable commercial models becoming more evident in the battery storage space, as monetising the investment through multiple revenue streams becomes better understood. Short term storage deployment using batteries is accelerating and scaling at an encouraging pace. However, the same is not yet true for medium and long-term storage,” comments Malcolm Rushin, Australian Future Energy Leader, GHD.
“There’s a clear need to accelerate the deployment of the proven and well understood pumped hydro technology, available for medium and long-term storage, in order to meet Australia’s net zero obligations. These projects currently face multifaceted challenges and a focus on de-risking these projects for developers is required to stimulate deployment to the levels needed.
“The road map also outlines some emerging technologies – such as alternative electrochemical, mechanical, chemical and thermal storage. Once ready for commercial deployment many of these emerging technologies could experience the same growth trajectory, we are seeing with lithium ion-based batteries today.”
