Trenchless Technology magazine has released its annual list of the Top 50 Trenchless Design Firms in 2017, and the results show continuing growth in the trenchless market in North America.
The list ranks trenchless engineering companies – including large and specialized firms – in North America, based on a survey of trenchless revenue relative to total company revenue, trenchless design workforce and projects completed in the past five years. GHD’s tunneling and trenchless team is part of this growth, and has moved up two spots from last year to land at number 15.
“We’ve been seeing the increasing market demand for trenchless solutions,” said Bradley Marin, Engineering Technologist in our Waterloo office. “The technology and equipment that is available now has opened up projects that in the past might have been too complicated or risky. We’re also seeing more potential to expand the use of these technologies in new applications.”
The survey of work completed by these companies offers a general impression of the annual performance for the trenchless market, and the 2017 results demonstrate “modest, yet positive growth” according to the magazine. Trenchless revenue for the Top 50 trenchless firms added up to a collective $1.3 billion in work, up slightly from $1.2 billion last year, and represented approximately 3 percent of the collective total revenue. The $1.3 billion represents a 41 percent increase over the past five years in trenchless revenue, which was $947 million in 2013 – demonstrating good long-term market growth.
The total number of trenchless projects completed also increased, with 11,672 finished in 2017, compared to 10,683 in 2016. Within that, projects utilizing horizontal directional drilling had the most completed projects at nearly 3,500, followed by subsurface utility engineering and pipe rehabilitation.
