As part of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, GHD was recently named as one of the Waterloo Area's Top Employers for 2019. Organized by Mediacorp, Canada’s largest publisher of employment periodicals and manager of the Eluta job search engine, this competition recognizes employers in the Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph areas that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
The two main qualifications for consideration are that the organization must be an industry leader in attracting and retaining quality employees and should offer reasonable employment prospects. Companies are then judged on eight selection criteria, including physical workplace, work atmosphere/social, health/financial and family benefits, vacation and time off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement. All organizations are then compared to others in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. There is an emphasis on innovative programs that will attract and retain talented employees.
The Waterloo regional winners were published in the Waterloo Region Record (print) and by the Guelph Mercury Tribune (online) on November 24, including detailed reasons for their selection. The competition notes that this “is a distinguishing feature of our competition: it provides transparency in the selection of winners and ‘raises the bar’ so that other employers can discover and adopt initiatives that work well elsewhere. We also aim to provide job-seekers with a better understanding of what leading employers offer, while providing transparency in the selection of winners.”
Richard Yerema, managing editor of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, Mediacorp Canada Inc., commented, “Each application year, we observe employers making small incremental changes that ultimately help elevate them into the category of a top employer – these are the employers that continue to develop and adopt policies that define best practices for our current time, employers who understand that human resources best practices evolve with the expectations of new generations. Those that do return have very much evolved and kept pace with the changes we have documented.”
Special GHD celebrations are being planned in recognition of this award. Chris Hunter, Ontario Region Managing Principal, noted, “It’s a great honor to receive this award, which recognizes all the collaborative efforts of our strong community that have gone into making GHD a great place to work and a place where our people and their careers are thriving.”
Kate Davies, Talent Acquisition Manager for Canada, added, “We are thrilled to be recognized with this prestigious award. We know that creating a rewarding, flexible, and inclusive work environment is essential to attracting external talent, in addition to supporting and engaging our people. We can’t wait to launch recruiting campaigns that honor this award!”
Special thanks to Lindsay Hurst from the People team for putting together the extensive application and congratulations to everyone in the Waterloo office!
