To further support Australia’s expansion into large-scale energy storage, Mike Westerman joins GHD to provide market solutions for sustainable hydropower development.
Mike is the Technical Lead for Hydropower at GHD and has over 38 years’ experience within the energy sector with a focus on hydropower. He brings qualifications in engineering, business and applied law.
Steve Bond, GHD’s Australian Leader, Power, says, “Having worked with Mike before, it is very pleasing to welcome him to our Power team. He will tailor and coordinate GHD’s extensive capabilities in dam, tunnel, underground works, electrical connections and mechanical plant to meet client needs for hydropower development including pumped hydro.”
After commencing his career on Australia’s key pumped hydro schemes at Shoalhaven and Wivenhoe, Mike gained wide-ranging experience in all phases of hydropower development around the world.
“Due to his deep understanding of the sector Mike is able to bring technical, commercial and project development skills to satisfy clients participating in the transformation of Australia’s energy sector to a low emissions, renewable energy future,” Steve says.
Mike is currently involved in most of the pumped hydro prospects being developed in Australia.
“Pumped hydro is more cost effective and has fewer environmental concerns than competing technologies such as solar thermal and batteries, although batteries can be complementary at a smaller scale,” Mike says.
Hydropower in action
GHD provides critical capability in power and dam engineering to enhance the role of existing and future pump storage solutions for Australia.
Taraz Saba, GHD’s Project Director, Renewables says, “By applying foundational principles we are supporting several mining clients looking to repurpose existing mining pits and infrastructure for pumped hydro.”
These existing facilities are likely to be first to market in the new wave of pumped storage because the local geology and topography are well understood and the facilities have an existing social licence to operate.
Mike’s appointment will adds specific hydropower knowledge and experience into our already very strong team of renewable energy specialists.
“GHD continues to bring all the skills together to meet clients’ needs as pumped hydro becomes re-established in the market,” Steve says.
