One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services companies, GHD, has supported Arriva UK Trains in its successful bid for the Northern franchise, which it will begin operating from 1 April, 2016.
According to the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin, this franchise is part of “the biggest transformation of rail journeys in the north of England in decades, with an unprecedented package of improvements for passengers. Arriva went far beyond our requirements with exciting ambitious plans that will make a real difference to passengers.”
Steve Curtis, GHD’s Manager Transport Strategy and Planning, says, “We have helped Arriva develop a winning timetable for a franchise of 16,000 trains per week (an additional 2,000 trains on today’s levels), which will bring 37% extra capacity and new direct journey opportunities across the network. This was a very complex task, requiring careful consideration of commercial, crowding and operational implications. We’re delighted with the result and congratulate Arriva on this achievement.”
GHD also provided key modelling support in areas including demand and revenue forecasting, and queue modelling as well as significant contributions to the environment, fares, ticketing, revenue protection, safety, security and innovation strategies.
John Dutton, GHD’s UK Director, says, “New and improved transport connections are a crucial part of the government’s vision for the Northern Powerhouse. With offices from Sutton Weaver to York, we recognise that the North is critical to the economic development of the country. Our people are proud to play a part in transformational projects that create a brighter future for this growing region.”
