GHD’s aviation team has won the coveted infrastructure category at the Engineers Australia Queensland Engineering Excellence awards for its work on the Brisbane Airport Runway Overlay project.
In a field of 31 finalists, GHD was acknowledged for its technical accomplishments and out-of-box approach on the resurfacing of 3.5 kilometres of Brisbane Airport’s runway, without affecting its strict air traffic schedule.
Operating 24 hours a day, Brisbane Airport is one of the world’s busiest single-runway airports. The runway could not be closed to aircraft for an extended period of time, so all work had to be carefully scheduled.
Despite a highly compressed timeframe for delivery of design and construction (only 800 hrs of construction time available), GHD determined that the proposed programme of works, though ambitious, could be achieved with minimal disruption to Brisbane Airport’s regular operations.
Jaco Liebenberg, who was GHD’s project lead, attended the ceremony with his team and was delighted when he heard the project name announced to the audience.
“The project was extremely challenging but rewarding and the success was a result of an amazing team effort by GHD, Brisbane Airport and Fulton Hogan,” Jaco said.
This project will now move forward to Engineers Australia’s national Australian Engineering Excellence Awards, which will be announced at a special gala dinner during the Australian Engineering Conference in Sydney in September.
