Congratulations to Sarah Gilmour, Geochemist, GHD who was recently named Exceptional Young Woman in Tasmanian Resources. The recognition is underpinned by Sarah’s technical excellence and her passion to raise the profile of the mining and resources sector as an inclusive and rewarding career option for other women.
The annual awards are coordinated by the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) in conjunction with the AusIMM Women in Mining Network Tasmania (WIMnet). This category recognises an outstanding young woman who has shown significant promise and achieved significant milestones in her career to date in resources, mining and manufacturing.
Sarah began her career with GHD as graduate geochemist in its Hobart office, and joined an existing team of five hydrogeologists and geochemists – all male and all significantly older than her. Since then she has made a noteworthy impact through her leadership.
“In a short time Sarah has demonstrated her skills to clients who now trust her to lead multiple projects, including geochemical sampling programs and geoscientific projects outside her core discipline,” says Lee Evans, GHDs Service Line Leader, Mining, Engineering & Geosciences, Australia. “This kind of technical leadership is outstanding for a young professional.”
Sarah is also leading a literature review on a project that seeks to tackle soil acidity issues in the Western Australia wheatbelt. This opportunity came on the back of her knowledge and experience gained at the University of Tasmania during her Honours project.
Sarah also promotes the indsutry and her experiences at young professional events, through her ongoing involvement and interaction with the university, publication and various conference presentations.
“These awards put a much-deserved focus on the talent and achievements of early career professionals,” says Lee.
“This is a huge achievement and a testament to Sarah’s continuous efforts to provide cutting-edge geochemical advice and assessment for the mining industry, both in Tasmania and across Australia,” adds Lee.
As a winner of the state awards, Sarah progresses to the national awards which will be hosted by the Minerals Council of Australia and announced in September.
