GHD is working on three major wind and solar farm projects in Western Australia, all of which were recently energised on to the Western Power grid, providing zero-emissions energy to communities, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards the decarbonisation of energy systems.
As owner’s engineer, GHD is helping its clients position Western Australia as a leading adopter of renewable energy. Bright Energy Investment’s Warradarge Wind Farm (183 MW) and Greenough River Solar Farm Stage 2 (30 MW) along with Alinta Energy and RATCH- Australia’s Yandin Wind Farm (214 MW) will provide energy to residential and industrial consumers who are connected to Western Power’s South West Interconnected Network.
All three projects will be connected before the peak of summer when people use additional electricity to run air conditioners and swimming pools, thus providing a significant source of renewable energy to displace electricity generated from traditonal fossil fuels.
As owner’s engineer on all three projects, GHD’s role includes design review, commissioning support, contract compliance monitoring, project management, contract administration, document control, advice, and site supervision.
“The owner’s engineer plays a critical role by helping the project navigate a variety of technical and contractual complexities from start to finish,” says Robert Ceic, GHD’s Australian Service Line Leader - Power Generation and Renewable Energy. “The owner’s engineer serves as the independent advocate for the owner and as well as filling technical gaps, supplementing the owner’s project team and leveraging the benefit of lessons learnt from a variety of GHD’s renewable energy projects outside of Western Australia.”
As part of GHD’s services, full-time site representatives were present for the duration of construction plus commissioning and worked collaboratively alongside the client and construction contractor teams. Paul Buch, GHD’s Energy Market Leader notes, “Our teams have made a significant and valuable contribution to the ultimately successful completion of these exciting facilities that progress WA’s energy transition.”
GHD is proud of its track record of owner’s engineering services for a number of signature renewable energy projects in Australia, such as the celebrated Hornsdale Wind Farm and Power Reserve Battery in South Australia, Coopers Gap Wind Farm in Queensland, the Parkes, Griffith and Dubbo Solar Farms in NSW, the Bulgana Green Hub in Victoria as well as the Badgingarra Wind and Solar Farm in WA.
