We are committed to LGBTI inclusion at GHD by creating an environment where our people feel comfortable to share all aspects of themselves at work. So what does ‘sharing your whole self’ really mean? Cam Watts has been proud and open about his sexuality at GHD for more than 15 years. Here he shares four lessons he has learnt along the way.
Difference makes all the difference
In a fast changing, disruptive and competitive world, successful businesses survive when they embrace diversity. It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable to share their different perspectives and knowledge. You never know what great ideas your team members may have – and the fact that everyone in the the room is included and respected makes all the difference.
The value of strong leaders
Exceptional leadership requires courage. Leaders embrace diversity and create safe spaces for everyone to shine. A thriving diverse environment requires leaders who continuously encourage inclusion and genuinely value diversity.
Visibility is part of nurturing a successful career
I’ve been out and confident in the workplace for most of my career, but working for a large global company means that ‘coming out’ isn’t a one-off event (even after 15 years). Being openly ‘out’ in the workplace should mean business as usual for everyone. It’s that simple. And it’s like that at GHD.
Sharing stories
Being inclusive means creating an environment where people don’t hesitate to share personal stories. Honesty, trust and friendships are the hallmarks of a great workplace.
