To coincide with global celebrations of World Engineering Day, GHD Digital launched the Future of Engineering 4.0 Thoughtbook “Tomorrow’s Thinking. Today’s People.” - a provocative and compelling collection of vignettes focused on engineering in Industry 4.0.
This year, World Engineering Day will be observed for the first time on March 4 to globally celebrate the achievements of engineers and engineering.
The celebration comes as engineering, like all industries and professions, has to reinvent itself in the face of digital disruption. A 2017 McKinsey report highlighted that, with the low track record of technology adoption and major productivity challenges, the engineering and construction industry is a prime target for disruption.
Looking to what the future might hold for engineering, GHD Digital has released the Future of Engineering 4.0 Thoughtbook, comprising reflections and insights from more than 40 leaders across industry, government and academia worldwide.
“Engineers and the broader engineering discipline have been central to the three industrial revolutions humankind has experienced so far,” says Jacyl Shaw, GHD Digital’s Global Director: D-Lab.
“Now, as we face the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, engineers need to reimagine their roles to avoid playing second fiddle to robots and digital tools. As calculations and designs become automated, we need to amplify capabilities that are uniquely human.”
