The Busselton Water Plant 1 Filtration project upgrade designed by GHD received Western Australia’s Regional Infrastructure Project Innovation Award in the Australian Water Association’s (AWA) Water Awards. GHD’s Andrea Georgiou was also recognised in the Northern Territory awards as Young Water Professional of the Year and a recipient of the Student Water Award.
The Water Awards program recognise the contribution of water professionals, innovative research programs and outstanding infrastructure projects across the water industry. This year commemorates 20 years of the program.
The Busselton Water Filtration Plant replaced 40-year-old end of life legacy drinking water treatment filters with new, highly innovative, custom-designed units.
The new design aims to achieve substantial improvements in safety, operability and environmental performance with a strong focus on sustainability.
“Due to the age of the existing plant and a strong client preference to reuse as many of the existing plant items as possible, the treatment plant was scanned to generate a 3D Point Cloud model and then utilised to develop the design model for the new works and highlight areas of risk,” says Daniel Visser, Design Manager, GHD.
“We are really pleased to celebrate this award with our client Busselton Water and help secure a potable water supply for Busselton for the next 40 years.
“The success of the project is a great example for the industry on the opportunities of transforming older drinking water treatment technologies to achieve outstanding results in the context of economies, safety, efficiency and environmental performance.”
GHD also congratulates Andrea Georgiou, a Graduate Civil Engineer in GHD’s Darwin office, who won Northern Territory’s Young Water Professional of the Year and also the Student Water Award for her Master’s thesis. Since starting her professional career 21 months ago, Andrea has formed trusted relationships across the water sector in Darwin and nationally not only from her work at GHD but also through her Master’s thesis which she completed at Charles Darwin University while working full-time at GHD. Her master’s thesis on non-revenue water could deliver innovation in the establishment of novel strategies for pressure management and improve asset performance of network services.
“Andrea represents the huge potential of our young water professionals in our water future and should be recognised as one of our rising stars – congratulations Andrea,” says Rod Naylor, Australian Market Leader – Water, GHD.

Rod adds, “These awards are an important part of recognising the innovation and excellence that is happening across the water industry. In the face of climate change, a global pandemic and economic recession, the water industry and its people have displayed resilience and innovation and I’m proud that GHD is the forefront of this.
The state level Water Award winners now progress through to the National Ozwater Awards in 2021.
