GHD is the Fund Coordinator for the Water for Women Fund - a flagship program in Australia’s engagement in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) that reflects high priority policy commitments in the Australian aid program.
Managing menstruation safely and with dignity can be challenging for women and girls in many of the countries within which the Fund is working.
Women and girls face a variety of challenges, including a lack of facilities and affordable products, taboos and associated isolation during menstruation, limited policy advocacy and leadership around Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and lack of knowledge and information about how to manage menstruation. These challenges have flow on effects such as girls not attending school or work, and women being unable to engage fully in their communities.
GHD is currently reviewing Water for Women Project Design Documents to begin implementation in July 2018. Many of these projects include MHM as a core focus - through breaking the silence to reduce the shame and stigma around periods, empowering women to take control of their menstrual health and transforming the supporting environment to allow this. Through such activities, MHM can also act as an entry point to consider broader issues of gender and socially inclusive approaches in WASH.
