One of the world’s leading engineering, environmental and advisory services companies, GHD, joined other industry pioneers to celebrate digital construction excellence at the 2018 BIM Awards.
GHD’s Tom Povey was joint winner of the prestigious ‘Keep your eyes on this one’ award, with the judging panel recognising Tom’s role in influencing the built environment and his potential for future contributions to live projects.
A civil and structural technician and self-taught programmer, Tom is leading the field in automated design. Through his contribution to the development of pioneering new techniques, Tom has helped to pave the way for easier model production, improved clash detection and greater efficiency in construction.
Tom also helps to push the boundaries of BIM use across the company by collaborating with colleagues as part of GHD’s global Dynamo Development Group.
Using the Autodesk Dynamo product, the group has automated numerous time-consuming design tasks through sharing, updating and writing new scripts. Tom and the development group will soon roll out training of their innovative workflows to BIM users across GHD, significantly increasing efficiency, upskilling a wide user base and providing substantial benefits for clients.
Tom says, “Streamlining workflows through innovative use of BIM has transformed how we deliver projects. We can now spend more time focusing on economic design solutions rather than painstaking, repetitive tasks.”
At the forefront of advancements in BIM, GHD is practiced in the use of digital technology to add value to projects. The company has employed BIM processes to drive quality and ensure buildability at an integrated waste management plant in Derby, UK. GHD has also used live 3D models to review designs for the new spa as part of the restoration and refurbishment of Grade II listed luxury hotel, Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire.
